The importance of air quality monitoring cannot be overstated. Asbestos air concentrations should be monitored to see if significant amounts are being released as a result of asbestos removal processes. Detection of even a single fibre per 100 mL of air necessitates investigation of the contamination source and the adoption of new safety procedures.
If the asbestos is 'friable,' constant, comprehensive air monitoring is required (prone to breaking or shedding crystal fibres). Asbestos removal in or near a public place also necessitates a permit, as does the removal of more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos.
