What is a Bucher Bestseller?

Whether they’ve sold thousands of copies or millions, the best-seller list is an incredible honor for any author. But it also makes authors’ hearts ache when they get booted off it.

The New York Times best-seller list is widely considered the preeminent list of top-selling books in the United States. It is published weekly in the Sunday edition of The New York Times and as a stand-alone publication.

Another popular list is the San Francisco Chronicle, which tracks sales at about 50 stores in the Bay Area and gathers data from a larger percentage of independent stores than the New York Times list does. It’s not the most comprehensive list, but it includes titles that are too esoteric for chains and books that people are willing to pay full price for.

Publishers often value the Chronicle list for what is considered its predictive value, which means that it’s been used to predict future national best sellers. A few recent books, including Snow Falling on Cedars and Cold Mountain, appeared on the Chronicle list long before they made it to the New York Times’.

Some of the biggest names in contemporary fiction have appeared on the bestseller list, including James Patterson and Nora Roberts. The list has also included John Grisham and George R.R. Martin, among others.

In 2002, PW published a bestseller report that noted eight books with sales of two million and more; an additional 39 claimed more than one million.

These titles were a big surprise for publishers because it wasn’t what they expected. It was a small group of titles that had a large impact on the industry.

Many of the books on this list are mass-market titles, with millions of copies of each sold. Some are bestselling classics that haven’t been reprinted in decades, and some are a fresh perspective on an old subject.

The list is also a great place to find a wide range of authors and styles, which can be helpful for marketing your book.
